The most popular distributions are MiKTeX on Windows machines, MacTeX for the Mac, and
TeX Live on Linux boxes.
(You might additionally be interested in LyX,
which can be viewed as a visual front-end to LaTeX.)
As an alternative to installing your own LaTeX system, convince yourself that you can remotely log in to the Calclab machines by using a free NX client from NoMachine.
