Many excellent implementations of TeX and LaTeX can be downloaded for free from CTAN.
MiKTeX is a highly regarded free version of TeX and LaTeX for Microsoft's operating system.
Linux or other Unix users will be happy with teTeX.
For the Macintosh, there are two shareware programs: CMacTeX and OzTeX.

Expensive commercial implementations of TeX and LaTeX are available too. Some of these may be worth the money if you are going to be using LaTeX intensively for large projects.
The longest established TeX implementation for PCs running the Microsoft operating system is PCTeX; local users at Texas A&M University can contact the Software Evaluation and Licensing Library concerning the campus site license.
There is a WYSIWYG front-end for LaTeX called Scientific Word, as well as a companion program Scientific WorkPlace that additionally has an embedded copy of Maple.
Blue Sky Research sells the premier commercial Macintosh implementation of TeX.
