The results of the second examination indicate that not everybody has mastered linear second order differential equations. Therefore, your assignment is to review Chapter 4 in Nagle & Saff and make sure that you can solve non-homogeneous equations like exercises 13, 21, 23, 25, 27, 31, and 35 on page 229. There will be a quiz on this topic in class.
Take a quiz to demonstrate proficiency in solving linear second order differential equations with constant coefficients.
Work on the computational aspects of Laplace transforms. (Next week, we will apply Laplace transforms as a tool for solving differential equations.)
Read sections 7.1-7.4, pages 351-378, in Nagle & Saff.
Read the first three sections of Chapter 5, pages 63-69, in the lab manual. These sections show examples of how to compute Laplace transforms with Maple.
Work the following problems in Nagle & Saff. Hand in your solutions at the beginning of class on Tuesday, April 14.
Because you need to develop some computational skill with Laplace transforms, you should do these problems either by hand or by using the tables in the book. You may use Maple to check your answers.
Section 7.2, page 363, exercises 9 (compute by hand); 13, 17 (use either the table on page 362 or the table inside the back cover of the book); 30.
Section 7.3, page 369, exercises 1, 9 (use the tables in the book); 23, 29.
Section 7.4, page 379, exercises 3 (complete the square and use the table of Laplace transforms); 21, 25, 27 (work out the partial fractions decomposition by hand, and then use the table of Laplace transforms).
