Of course, you may start on the homework during class if you have time!
Next class you will be writing a little paper in LaTeX, so you should familiarize yourself ahead of time with basic equation formatting in LaTeX.
In preparation for next class, work through Chapters 3 and 4 of the CalcLabs with Maple V manual.
There are thousands of newsgroups on line, where you can find discussion and information about everything from AA to Zappa; from K-12 math education to the Intel Pentium chip. One of the best ways to find out something about computers (and other topics) is to ask someone who knows; newsgroups facilitate this interchange.
It is easy to browse the newsgroups from Mosaic or
Netscape. From Mosaic, click on News
and then
Group Index
; from Netscape, click on Window
and
then Netscape News
.
When you find some interesting newsgroups, you can
mark them ``subscribed,'' and the Web browser will remember your
selections for the future. There is a tamu.classes.math696 group
specifically for our course.
It is generally advisable not to post messages to a high volume newsgroup until you have been reading it for a month or so. Many groups have a FAQ (list of Frequently Asked Questions), which typically appears monthly; read the FAQ before posting a question! You can learn about net etiquette in news.announce.newusers; see also the local netiquette guidelines.
There is a Web site that enables you to search news groups for information.
You previously sent me a list of your hobbies. For homework, find a newsgroup related to one of your hobbies and forward to me a copy of an interesting article from that newsgroup.
